How I Curb Anxiety

I'd love to tell you everything is smooth and jammy over here on my side on the pond, but that wouldn't be entirely truthful. Like many people, I struggle with anxiety. It's usually nonsensical anxiety that my body pushes on me like a large, unwanted gift of straight-up awful. My mind knows it's silly. My mind doesn't want it (No, thank you!), but can't seem to reject it. Thanks a lot body!

Am I destined to choking down beta-blockers and SSRIs to ease my racing heart and trembling hands? To help quell my social awkwardness? Nah. Here are just a few things that I personally implement to help deal with daily anxiety. As always, check with your doctor before undertaking a new health routine. I'm not a doctor. Only you and your provider and/or counselor can determine what's best for you.

These are some of the things I do daily. I've listed them in order of my day. The holidays can be stressful, so try some of these out and get to relaxing.

Go Vegan

Shocking, right? Fo' real though. A 2012 study found that eliminating animal products from one's diet resulted in improved mood within two weeks! Animal products can have an inflammatory effect on the body.

Why do fruits and vegetables improve our mood? Because of the inhibitors of the depression-associated enzymes that are found in various plants. So eat those plants up! Really though, you don't need me telling you to eat plants...

...better moods on plant-based diets could also be from the good stuff in plants—a class of phytonutrients that cross the blood brain barrier into our heads. A recent review in the journal, Nutritional Neuroscience, suggests that eating lots of fruits and vegetables may present a noninvasive natural and inexpensive therapeutic means to support a healthy brain.

It works. Sounds hokey, I know, but try it out. At the very least you'll smell nice!

In the morning and throughout the day I like to dab lavender oil on my wrists and neck. It's a very light and unoffending scent (unless you hate lavender). I use Aura Cacia 100% Pure Essential Lavender Oil. It's an easy buy at my grocery store, but you can find it on Amazon too.

Lavender is known to have a very calming effect. That's why it's always in the heating pads. For more interesting information on lavender with regards to treating anxiety, check out this video and this video

If you really don't like lavender, orange oil is also known to lower anxiety levels. I use the doTerra Wild Orange Oil the same way as the lavender oil. Find out more about that in this great video. You can purchase orange oil at Amazon

Incredibly, saffron has anti-anxiety properties. I actually started huffing saffron for my crippling cramps. However, I learned that it's reported to be just as effective as Prozac. Legit stuff. Look into it, you'll want to, from the video here. The best part is that you can buy it from the grocery store! Or from Amazon. Plus I really, really, like the way saffron smells. It's kind of pricy, but you don't actual use any of it. Just sniff it. Maybe try to refrain from doing it in public though...

Rooibos

Rooibos, or red tea, can ease stress and anxiety. Researchers recently found that human adrenal gland cells in a petri dish produce about 4 times less steroid hormones, like cortisol, in the presence of rooibos.

I really like this organic Rooibos Chai by Numi. You can read more about how it beats stress here. Also, green tea is good for relaxing the mind. I drink tea throughout the day to keep me in relaxed state. Todd calls Rooibos, "monk tea" because it makes him feel super zen. Like a monk!

Soothing and/or Uplifting Music

Listen to your favorite tunes to cheer you up or calm you down. These are some of my very favorites.

Meditation

I meditate (or practice "mindfulness") at least four days a week for 15-30 minutes. It takes a little practice. Often I hear people say they could never meditate because they just can't stop thinking! Yeah...that's kind of the point of doing it. Your brain will always be thinking of things, even during meditation. The best advice I've heard is to let the thoughts come and go. Don't follow them and don't push them away. Like a cloud, just let them pass. If I'm really having trouble, I will focus on my breathing.

I really like to use guided meditation, because I find the words of another very soothing. This isn't "image" guided meditation, mind you. I'm not a big fan of that for some reason. If you're interested, there a few apps I use and like a lot. The first is called Insight Timer. I have it on my phone. I also subscribe to Meditation Oasis with Mary Maddox, as a podcast on my phone. She is very relaxing to listen to. Loving kindness meditation is a wonderful thing to practice. Meditation is all about being "in the moment" and not worrying on the future, or regretting the past.

I always meditate laying down, because it's more comfortable for me. There's no right or wrong way to go about doing it. Meditate however suits you best. Also, yoga is also a great way to slow down. I do yoga three days a week and meditate during the day and sometimes at night as well.

Magnesium

"The Original Chill Pill". Yep. Read ALL about it here, from Psychology Today. I won't go into detail, but magnesium has been scientifically proven to chill ya out, bro. I take a 250 mg supplement at night. It also helps with sleep (yay!) and constipation (no troubles in that department..) I make sure to get it from the foods I eat too. Foods that are high in magnesium are chard, pumpkin seeds, spinach, edamame, black beans, and quinoa.

Heating Bag

I was gifted a flannel flaxseed filled bag for Christmas a few years ago and it is THE BEST THING EVER. Things are about to get real strange okay, but it's the truth.

I call it my "puppy" and Todd heats it up for three minutes every night in the microwave and I sleep with it. It's seriously my life. Sometimes if I'm really chilled or just need a snuggle bunny, I heat it up and lay it on my chest or neck. The weight and heat of it is so soothing. This is similar to what I have.

Misc.

Exercise!! Very important. Get outside!! Also important. Snuggles with your favorite furry companion is definitely a stress soother. Breathing exercises are effective too. I like to take a big breath in and hold it for five seconds, let it out slowly and hold it out for five seconds. Repeat until you're as zen as a monk .

What do you do to help curb anxiety?

Chai Spiced Baked Doughnuts

Food photography friends...I had to break out the artificial light for the first time this fall, and it nearly broke my tiny heart. Darkness is coming. Take this time to be thankful for the light, for it is precious.

Todd requested a dessert for a party being thrown for a co-worker friend who is moving jobs. He always gets to bring the raddest vegan desserts to his work. Remember the pumpkin cinnamon rolls from last year? He requested them again because everyone loved them, but I told him that we had to make something new!

Produce On Parade - Chai Spiced Baked Doughnuts - These baked donuts are infused with chai spice in the batter and the crunchy glaze. A unique doughnut that’s easy to make and sure to be a big hit. The taste is a bit like snickerdoodles.

I reckon some readers are tired of pumpkin this and pumpkin that. Oh, what a life these people must lead that their biggest frustration is an acute obsession with a delicious, orange winter squash. Boo hoo. Who are these people!? I don't know. Honestly, I didn't make them pumpkin doughnuts because Todd is convinced he doesn't like the stuff. Although, I'd like to remind him that he was the one who requested the pumpkin cinnamon rolls again. He's a closet pumpkin lover.

Rule your mind or it will rule you.

Chai Spiced Baked Doughnuts
These baked donuts are infused with chai spice in the batter and the crunchy glaze. A unique doughnut that’s easy to make and sure to be a big hit. The taste is a bit like snickerdoodles. NOTES: For an extra chai kick, try using chai tea by steeping one tea bag in ¾ cup water. Or, just plain water can be used. If you need a chai spice mix recipe, I like the one from Fit Foodie Finds.
Ingredients
  • ¾ cup chai tea or water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup vegan sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. chai spice
  • ¼ tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • -- Glaze --
  • 1/4 cup full-fat coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 tsp. chai spice
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375° F. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour through and including the salt for the doughnuts. Make a well in the center with a large spoon. In a small bowl, whisk together the tea or water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Pour into the dry well, while stirring. Stir until just combined.Scoop the batter into a regular doughnut pan coated with a nonstick cooking spray. The wells should be filled about ¾ the way full. Too full and the doughnut hole will close in, not filled full enough and the doughnut will have a huge hole in the center. If you have a six doughnut pan like me, you will bake them in batches. If you have a twelve doughnut pan, you can do them all at once, just be sure they are cooled for about 20 minutes before glazing. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a minute. Then, run a butter knife blade around each doughnut to loosen it from the pan. Tip the pan upside-down to remove the doughnuts. Place them on a wire cooling rack. Repeat with remaining batter.Once the second batch of donuts is done baking and has cooled for about 5 minutes, it’s time to make the glaze. Whisk together the glaze ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat for several minutes until runny. Then, immediately dip the doughnuts face-first into the glaze one by one and set back on the cooling rack. Then repeat again for a second glaze dip. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar if you like and allow to dry on the rack. It will take a few hours for the glaze to set and be somewhat hard.Store in an airtight container.

Good Deed of The Day

Did you see the news recently? Do you know what the photo below is of? That's a mass of 35,000 walruses that have come ashore at Point Lay, Alaska because their ice caps that they normally go to have melted. Scary is an understatement.  I think we should all tell our senators that we need immediate, strong climate action in order to save the grand walrus and many other beautiful, threatened species.

David Rio Power Chai Review & Recipe

On occasion, my best friend in the world stops by the clinic and brings me a chai tea. It is the most delicious beverage ever. Especially when it's unexpected and delivered to you at work. I love her so much. I asked her what kind of chai it was (as I am very particular about my chai) and she told me it's David Rio's Elephant Vanilla Chai made with soy milk. I knew I had to get my hands on some of this chai tea powder. I went onto the David Rio site to learn about this most delicious chai, because that's just the kind of person I am. Must. Research. Everything. Based out of San Francisco, all David Rio chai is GMO-free and kosher, and their Tiger Spice Chai is organic. As part of their mission, they work with animal welfare organisations such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and several others. I thought, of course, that is was absolutely fabulous. I read somewhere that every dollar you spend, you are casting a vote for the kind of world you want to live in...or something like that. It's hard to find companies that have integrity and do genuinely take an interest in animal welfare and rights.

All their chai mixes are called "dairy-free". They use a non-dairy creamer as a milk substitute in the powder mixes. However, the non-dairy creamer does contain sodium caseinate, which is a milk derivative. But, it is technically considered a non-dairy product. Yet, I personally, couldn't feel good about drinking something with sodium caseinate. And Todd, of course, cannot have any milk whatsoever because it's a big trigger for his rheumatoid arthritis.

Saddened, I knew I couldn't justify purchasing any of the chia mixes, even with all the great work they do for animal welfare charities! While perusing their website I saw that they have one variety of chai that is completely dairy-free, their Power Chai! I was so excited, I cannot even tell you. Behold, the David Rio Power Chai.

rio (1 of 9) rio (2 of 9)The Power Chai is absolutely lovely. It's a delicious blend of black tea and Japanese Matcha, a ceremonial green tea powder. Rich and frothy, this chai is bold, lively and sure to put a smile on your face. You know how sometimes when something is so good, it makes you do a little dance? No? That's just me, huh. Well, it makes me do a little dance. Todd knows what I'm talking about.

ssThere is only one place in Alaska that carries David Rio tins for purchase, but they do not carry the Power Chai. I plan to ask our local grocery store to carry it! Please check out their site here to see all their wonderful products and the good they extend toward animal welfare! Amazon.com also carries David Rio, but again, the Power Chai is only available with an outrageous shipping cost. Perhaps because it's new? Maybe in the coming year, it too will be available!

rio1Move over Oregon Chai. This is my new favorite chai. My take on the basic David Rio Power Chai tea latte is made with creamy, silky coconut milk with a little splash of sweet vanilla and a pinch of cayenne for a little spicy bite.

Invigorating Power Chai Latte

Makes 1 large mug

  • 1 1/2 cups cartoned coconut milk (I use Silk Vanilla)
  • 3 Tbsp. David Rio Power Chai mix
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • pinch of cayenne pepper

Heat the coconut milk milk in the microwave or over low heat on the stove.

Whisk in the chai mix, vanilla and cayenne pepper.

rio (3 of 9) chai1Serve hot and frothy!

rio (6 of 9)Todd and I sipped this chai while wrapping presents. Check out this sweet wrap job. The paper is actually part of the packaging from the box that David Rio sent me. I'm not making that up. Yes, I use packing paper for all my gifts. Don't judge. It's awesome, economical and environmentally friendly. I asked Todd for a hippy high five when I told him this. He did not disappoint. Crazy hippies for the win!

rio (9 of 9) rio (8 of 9)Do you like Todd's snowflake? I told him it was a bit Southwestern, I don't think it was on purpose...but we had a good chuckle about it. OMG, we are lame. Also, as of right now, that greenery you see is our Christmas tree. Waaahhhh!

Yes, I am listening to a playlist called, Jazzy Christmas.... Harry Connick, Jr. – Have A Holly Jolly Christmas
